#956: The Conversation

October 3, 2014

Notes from the Manager

Related Strips: #955: The Spy Who Came in from the Cold

This is neither here nor there, but one of the things that’s been hammered home in the History of Science and Technology class I’m taking this semester is that the date of an “invention” is often pretty nebulous. The technology that Caller ID is based on dates back to 1968, with other developments in the following years by various people. The 1984 date Max is using here is from the first market trial of the Caller ID system, which I think is a fair date to describe it as “existing” from (from a consumer perspective), even if the technology for it predates it.

These are the kinds of things I think about when I’m writing throwaway jokes.
